Matroska (*.mkv) is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video
 and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD
 in a single file.,

 Advantages agains *.avi:
 * Matroska is Open source
 * Matroska supports Chapter entries
 * Matroska Selectable subtitle streams (even vobsubs, merged in the *.mkv)
 * Matroska Selectable audio streams
 * Matroska Menus (like DVDs have)

 mplayer and xine can play *.mkv.
