Comment:

 I think this was a problem with opengl vsync, glx, etc.  I'm not sure how
 it was working before, but now it crashes if you don't have it configured
 right (DUH!).
 I should have found this sooner, since i've troubleshooted this problem on
 other people's systems.  My bad.
