 This backports #12256 to -fixes,

 to quote the previous commit log:

    This patch handles when we get invalid extra bytes of data (like from an
    xbox360 at bootup) or the remote machine stops mid transmission.

    Previously this would leads to a 100% cpu usage in an infinite loop.
