 (In [8588]) References #743.

 Applies the first two of Stuart's patches, a [8551] revert, and the
 cleanup patch.

 The last patch needs a small fix; I've e-mailed Stuart the details, but
 basically the patch adds a signal and slot, and we're trying to phase
 those out on the backend for stability reasons.
