 I think it masks out the problem, at least I can't reproduce like I could
 before (ticket#3013), but that was also the only way I ever reproduced it.

 I still don't think allowing two threads to read/write the same list is
 safe in the long run. Something else is going to get bitten by it and no-
 one will remember that we've already been through this.
