Comment(by stuartm):

 All DVDs I've tried - including Walk the Line, Gladiator and Garden State
 (Region 2 - PAL). The last two, at least, worked fine when I last tried
 them.

 DVDs were turned on by hitting 'T' (or OSD menu).
