 well i am back from my travels - took a bit longer than i expected.

 anyway. i've done a lot of testing and these are my observations (all done
 with 19988):

 if i leave the default (for gentoo) xorg-server installed then
 mythfrontend still crashes.
 if i use fglrx then i get a whole load of screen corruption (not myth's
 fault).

 so i tricked around and installed a later xorg server and the problem goes
 away.

 so mythfrontend will now hit a bug in xorg-server that it did not do
 previously

 so i would say that it is fixed.
