 i got rid of it by changing my xorg configuration
 to be honest it is so long ago now that i forget

 i do know that i had it on nvidia, ati and intel, so it was not a driver
 problem

 i wish i knew what the particular option in xorg was causing this!
 i suspect it is something to do with overlays

 seems like either a clipping rectangle is being set incorrectly

 you might as well close it
