 Thanks for the update.  I did try something similar myself but it didn't
 seem to make any difference for my setup.  Please keep me posted.

 What I've done in the meantime is provided my wife with a cgi she can call
 from her browser to reset the mythtv-backend in case it fails so that's
 cut down the irritation factor somewhat...

 I'm curious to know how your fix is performing in the coming weeks.
