The direct answer is that there is a table called oldrecorded
to keep track of previous recordings. If the subtitle and
description are an exact match it will not re-record. If the
listings don't have subtitles, they will all be recorded.

One of the commercial products took this approach and went
bankrupt as this was one of many things that sucked about
their product. The problem is that you would have to keep
recordings solely for the purpose of preventing re-recording.
So, you finish watching a show and delete it. Then it records
again and you delete again. It records so you keep it to make
it not record again. You end up filling your disk with the
things you least want re-recorded rather than things you still
want to see ;-).
What is needed is an checkbox on the "i" page to check if you
want to record every showing or only record unique episodes.
There should be other options also on the "i" page like the
much anticipated recording profiles, starttime and endtime
offsets to name a few obvious per record choice options.
