Well, not in my opinion. The problems I am asking about, and have been for
over a week now, are related to getting mythtv to run on a Debian machine,
which appears to be a supported configuration (perhaps even the prefered).
And I must say, as nice as the project appears to be, it appears that I'm
never going to be able to find out as, unlike many many other projects I
use, there seems to be no polite, helpful people hanging out in the mailing
list. This is truly unofrtunate, as i was looking foward to replacing my
TiVo, with a computer that I bought for that purpose a tear ago, but
decided at the time that the state of open software for such use was not
ready.

Well, that's not really correct.

Here is the scenario.

I apt-get'd mythtv, and it failed to configure (apt-get configure, not the
post install configure). Turned out that some required packages were _not-
"required". So I trakced those down, thanks to some help form the mythtv
list. At this point in time, it still failed to configure. I tracked this
down to the fact that it could not connect to mysql. Installed the
"testing" mysql clinet and server, and mythtv's configure scrip was still
unable to connect to mysql to create the required schmas. Played around
with this, and asked on the lsit, but got no useful replies. At this point
in time i was able to connect to mysql as i'ts root user. I decided that it
might be a porblem with default passwords or such, so I aksed on the ythtv
list, again no answer. So finally in desperation I removed the "testing"
mytsql client and server, and installed the unstable ones. At this point in
time mythtv's deb still cannot conect to configure, not was I able to
connect as mysql's root user. So I removed the unstable packages, and
re-installed the stable ones.

That's where I am today, and at this point in time, neither can mythtv
connect to create it's schemas, nor can I connect to mysql as it's root
user. nor can I change the root mysql password using the appripriate mysql
tool.

I'm not about to do a re-install of a perfectly good computer with a years
worth of configuration, and tweaking on, as a hwim to try to install
mythtv. And even if I did, I'd still be back to my original problem with
it.

So, what I have is a problem with the combination of mythtv, and debians
packages. I doubt that anyone _not_ using muthtv would have a clue where to
start, regardles of how expert thay might be in mthtv
