Huzzah!  That seems to have fixed it.  In case it still would help, here 
are the specs on my setup

Single machine

Athlon XP 2000
Asus A7N266 Mobo
512 Mb RAM
Western Digital 1200BB  Harddrive
Leadtek WinFast 2000XP tuner
nVidia GeForce 2MX TV out

I'm running Red Hat 9, but with the last non-2.4.20 kernel from Red Hat 
8.0, since BTTV's contrast/hue/saturation/brightness seems broken in 
every 2.4.20 kernel I tried.
