Yup a lot of TiVo drives have custom firmware and they need to be
software "unlocked" after every powerup to get the full capacity. I
don't know of a way to permanently unlock them short of  reflashing
their firmware (if the drive supports it).

Backing up your TiVo". It explains the locking as well as having a link
to an unlock utility.

One thing that may not be crystal clear: once the drive is unlocked, it
stays unlocked until a _power_off_ so you can reboot and it's still
unlocked as long as it hasn't lost power.
