Well, my DVD player DOES work that way. So does TiVo. I find it really much
more useful than going from a high fast-forward rate to a slow rewind rate
just by hitting one button. Frankly, I couldn't tell you how my VCR works. I
haven't touched it since the day I bought a TiVo (but I have never seen a
VCR with 8 or more fast-forward speeds either, so that seems like an invalid
comparison).

Of course, at some point should also come "jump-back" behavior, so that when
you are flying through a program and get to the point where you want to
stop, the playback jumps back X seconds (X is tough to get right and depends
on the user's reflexes as well as the current speed of FF, so should be
configurable). This eliminates the *need* to go from fast-forward directly
to rewind.
