Exactly, from a user standpoint, several small pauses is much better than
one long pause. As it is right now, my wife comes running saying that
MythTV has locked up, by time I get there (of course) things are finally up.

A perfect example is the WinNT login screen. Microsoft presents the login
screen before it is actually ready for you to login because it provides the
_appearance_ of being faster. It then banks on you being slower to get the
login/password typed in before it can finish getting ready. Same excuse for
splash-screens for apps, progress bars, and things like the low-latency
scheduler. While over-all it slows the computer down, it provides the
appearance of being faster.
