This is exactly why I implemened those stuff...

It does everything you request except it doesn't check if a user is logged in 
the machine. But it does check if a frontend is connected to the backend so 
it doesn't shutdown.
It also doesn't prevent the user from halting the machine. The backendhost 
will shutdown automatically (and set the wakeuptime for the next recording), 
when no client is connected, no recording starts in the next say 15 minutes 
and it is idle for an amount of time. 
You have to simply choose "Exit MythTV", don't choose "Exit and shutdown" !

I use this patch a long time now and it works flawlessly.

But, since I don't know how to implement the shutdown feature over more than 
one backend, it will never make its way into cvs. If someone's interessted to 
help me on this, please get back to me.
