[mythtv] avformat error: -1

I have a recording which causes mythbackend to exit.  At the time of the 
exit, it spits out:

avformat error: -1

GDB reports "Program exited with code 01.", so it is not segfaulting.

How can I prevent mythbackend from exiting like this?  Refusing to play 
the episode is one thing, but exiting is bad.
