Sorry for the confusion and probably off-topic-ness, but with respect to
driving Scientific Atlanta boxes to change channels via the "IR" port on the
back -- indeed this is impossible.  I was confused because I had hooked my
Tivo up directly to this port using a stereo plug and it successfully
changed channels.  What I was unaware of until yesterday, however, was that
the Tivo actually has a built-in IR blaster in the front which works for
some people without any other mechanism -- that is what was actually working
in my case and not the cable, as verified by simply unplugging the darn
thing and having it continue to change channels...
