Actually, scratch that again. I noticed some agpgart errors saying it
didn't like the via chipset. 

So I found this page,

helped me tweak the modules.conf

I'm now been watching livetv for maybe 10-15 minutes. I've changed the
channels maybe 10-15 times, and switched into the preview guide a couple
of times.... no crashes, pretty solid so far. 

Before I goto bed, I'm going to setup some stuff to record. Hopefully I
will awake to a full recording of a show this time :)

reboot, and not changing the channel in livetv.
