I did see that, but it didn't occur to me that it would also allow me to
disable fading completely.

Just tried the patch...... 2 problems:
you've got 2 (identical) diffs for
libs/libmythtv/osd.h

and 2 (different - comments only) diffs for
themes/defaultosd/osd.xml

Not sure how you managed to do that, nothing major though.
whoever puts this into CVS will just need to remove them beforehand.
