That problem is pretty vague, so the best I can do is give you a similarly vague 
answer:  sounds like something is broken.

You should probabaly be asking people on the mythtv-USERS mailing list
( http://www.mythtv.org/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users/ ) , since
debian packages are release versions, and not CVS development.
Providing some more details as to what myth version you upgraded from, and what
version you're now trying to run might help.
Looking through your system logs, mythbackend logs, and output from
mythfrontend might show you some clues too.
