I haven't tried your patch, but that behaviour sounds nice to me too.  
Since I always schedule all my viewing ahead of time, flicking into 
livetv is basically just a "browse mode", and I will be pulling up the 
EPG immediately (I guess before with 5 channels that changed quickly, I 
would have just flicked through them all, but now the EPG is the fastest 
way)

I hope this gets through to    CVS in some useful form
