Thanks Bruce, that works.

I was trying to go into the program information screen, and change it to a
non-recording state there.  That did not work, of course.

While on the subject, is there a sane way to have this "state change" done
automatically?  If the tv_rec notices that it cannot tune to a channel for a
recording, could it automatically perform the steps as you have outlined
them?  I would be willing to work on the code to do it, but don't know where
to start.
