If the recording has already started, you need to go the the Watch
Recordings screen and delete from there.  Someday, you won't have to
change screens to do this.

It might not be too hard to do this when a program starts.  When the
scheduler tells the encoder to start, the encoder could simply say
"sorry, I can't do that right now".  Doing something after a program
starts, however, is bigger matter.
