And I just shot down my (shaky) theory. I really ought to be sleeping, 
but this is just eating at me. :-) Same behavior on a clean database.

I did notice something else -- I just happened to glance at my amp 
during playback of a 720p station, and the thing was blinking and 
flashing like made, flip-flopping back and forth between pcm and ac3. 
I'm assuming its probably just a side-effect of the stutter effect, and 
not really an indicator of what's actually going wrong. However, its 
got me thinking with respect to ALSA and some of the problems others 
have reported with 1.0.6... Perhaps a rebuild against different ALSA 
libs is worth a try, I've been building against what I believe is the 
version folks have had issues with...

I'll slap this into the rebuild against different ALSA libs tomorrow.
