Hi Doug,
I'm not at the machine at the moment so I can only report the console
output of xvidtune which might not be that useful:-

# xvidtune
Vendor: Monitor Vendor, Model: NEC LCD1850X
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0: 31.00 - 82.00
vsync range 0: 50.00 - 85.00

# xvidtune -show
"1280x1024" 0.00 1280 0 0 0 1024 0 0 0

Hmmm, could that be the problem? The driver is using a synthetic
modeline which isn't fully populated?

Regards,
