As Isaac mentioned, this was a bug in bttv where things would
be reinitialized in the wrong order on a reset. This could happen
at the start of a recording or if there was a reset due to a timeout.
This was in versions from late 2003 through spring of 2004 and has
been fixed for over a year.

This would be about the last kernel release that didn't include the
fix. The current bttv version 0.9.15 dated 21-Apr-2004 does not have
this bug. You could install any later kernel or if you can't or don't
want to, you can build and install the bttv driver version 0.9.15 from
http://bytesex.org/ .
