I believe he is referring to XvMC Surface[s] used for blending on
hardware that has a blend subpicture and not a backend subpicture.

You patch would still require the blend buffer on such hardware, but
may solve his problem anyway since generating the OSD steals CPU away
from the video output drivers. It's Andy's Chromakey patch he's
referring to, which decouples XvMC from the OSD, but doesn't look
as good at low resolutions since it only has transparency and not 
alpha blending.
