One possibility I haven't see mentioned is the fact that some/most  
commercials attenuate the midrange frequencies to get your attention. E.g.  
When someone is pissed, their vocal cords become tighter, and reduce the  
midrange frequencies. So when you hear, "Homeowners, need cash?" You have  
to look.
