If it's an nVidia card, try setting RenderAccel to 0 in xorg.conf.

There are issues relating to fonts and RenderAccel with nVidia drivers 
and altho' some people have said it is restricted to GTK, I have also 
seen it on KDE apps and thus Qt, so worth a bash.
