Why would you choose another channel while you are watching one?
Wouldn't that mean that you aren't watching that one?
But I think I know what you are getting at.
Yes, the Perl scripts will preempt a current recording.
There would be a couple of seconds worth of interruption however.
But normally you wouldn't want to be browsing channels
becaused the whole point of a pvr is to eliminate the crap
and preserve what you really want to watch.

That depends on the player you use.
My version doesn't dictate anything, you can specify the player
depending on hardware. For example, I have a DXR3 card which does
all the MPEG2 decoding in hardware.
So in my config file for certain recording hardware I can add:
play = "mplayer -ao oss:/dev/em8300_ma-0 -vo dxr3 -monitoraspect 5:4 -fixed-vo $FILES"
If you arrange to put detailed program information in subtitle
(using corresponding "record = xxxxx ${TITLE} xxxx ${DESCRIPTION} xxxx" config)
then you have your osd program information.
