[mythtv] VIDIOCGCAP:: Invalid argument ...?

hi, in yet another "black screen on live tv, reverting to menu after
60 sec" episode, the backend log consistently shows the invalid
argument message as per subject. Is it a 'bad thing', and if so, any
suggestions on debugging?
