Perhaps it's all to do with colour perception and tolerance. Sites such 
as phoronix used to be a nightmare to read. Now they've changed to dark 
text on a light (white) background, so presumably many others besides 
myself found it very taxing as the text colour seemed to merge into the 
background - very poor contrast resulting, that's why camouflage is used 
to good effect in the military.
Using thunderbird 3.x to compose this reply, the original text is blue 
on a green background and very difficult to read while my text is in 
white on the green background and easily readable.
