Well it predates playback groups, but people also use it for
different reasons. Some use it to correct for a misdetected
aspect ratio in the video, some use it to force a 4:3 video
to fill a 16:9 screen (with the wrong aspect ratio), and many
use it to zoom into a letterboxed video so that it fills the
screen (with the correct aspect ratio). The zoom and the aspect
ratio uses really should be separated, but haven't been yet.
