I think most patches that we've had to backport to 3.x would have have been OK
if we were using at least 4.1.x and 4.1.x gives us things like subqueries,
multi-table updates, etc..  With the MythTV release schedule, I wouldn't
be surprised if we dropped 4.x support after a couple more versions, or we
may decide to do that sooner.  This was mainly a warning to people that were
running 3.x that they need to upgrade.  If they're going to upgrade, they may
as well go to a 5.x version, so probably most people affected by a requirements
change from 4.x to 5.x will be people still running an semi-old distro
that came with 4.x.

We're looking at moving to embedded MySQL anyway, so that may happen before we
might make a decision to require v5.x.  Read up on the mailing lists for more
info on that or join the IRC channel if you'd like to help with that.
