Could it be that $HOME is not defined at startup for the user you are
running mythbackend as? This is a well known issue on Fedora - we
updated the Fedora init script some months ago to handle this
correctly. Perhaps a simple debugging test would be to output the
environment (especially $HOME) before the init script runs
mythbackend.

A good way to tell if you have a missing $HOME is if have /.mythtv/
and /.qt directories off / instead of a user directory.
