Still doesn't answer my question about why there's a perceived need
for a radio button or tick/check box on the menu screens.

You say "why not?", and I'm just asking "why?".

I'm not against improvements to the UI in any way - I mean from my own
perspective there are lots of changes I'd like to see to make it
possible for some of my theme ideas.

But why put a setting on a menu page?  It doesn't make any kind of
sense to me at all.
