just built 19647 and the problem still remains

tried turning on and off different options to see if i could find something.
will continue to investigate; but for now i can say that the following 
have no effect:

changing theme
changing osd theme
changing playback profile (well from slim to cpu++ at and rate)
changing between qt and opengl rendering

the two machines where i have the problem are intel pentium M
the rest are AMD64 and i have no crash

one of the problem machines uses ATI graphics (old Dell Insprion 8600) 
and the other uses Intel grahics (Asus EEE)
the ones that work use ATI and NVidia

so i see no pattern with the graphics card
all are running up to date gentoo
