The problem that I'm having actually comes from a function in
xine_demux_sputext.cpp.  This is the code that actually parses the
SubRip format (as well as others).  It looks like the code stops
reading the file prematurely.

It only reads the first 1000 bytes of the file and then bails.  This
is directly related to the LINE_LEN definition.  It's hitting this
limit and then stopping.
