AFAIK, Xorg will write 512MB independent of the selection in the BIOS.
However, you DO want 512MB dedicated, as anything less than this, can
cause issues with VDPAU.

"Many playback issues can be resolved by making sure enough memory has
been allocated to the video card, 256MB is minimum requirement and
most results suggest 512MB is adequate. For on-board video this is
usually configured via the "GPU Window" BIOS option. "
