As Paul mentioned, you need to enable the sdl when running configure for
mythffplay to compile.
Can you post a sample of a mp3 that doesn't play?

I personally have no problem playing mp3 via mythmusic. Mythmusic now looks
at the audio stream and ignore everything else (previously it always used
stream #0 which could cause some problems)

And post all logs with -v audio,playback,libav --loglevel=debug
