no worse that any other bad shutdown in my experience.

All the major manufacturers support linux directly, MGE, APC, PowerWare, 
BestPower, Liebert (java), etc etc. IIRC with the exception of Liebert, all 
of the companies I've mentioned have supported linux for at least 3 or 4 
years.  I currently have 4 APC upses spread throughout the office running 
APC's linux software, also have a few clients setup similarly.

Now with that said, for most smart upses, you don't even need their software, 
UPSD which ships with most distros will work with most standard, serial port 
smart upses out of the box.

There's a website that specifcally covers upses under linux, can't give you 
the link as I have no net access at the moment due to probs with dsl provider 
<sigh>, of course this happens while I am at a client's site and need to 
setup the dsl and vpn for the new webserver we just put in.

Yup as mentioned above, do a search for upsd.
