Thank you.  To prevent others from stumbling in the same places I did, here 
are more explicit instructions:

- Download the latest CVS from "http://ivtv.sourceforge.net/".
- Unzip, untar, "make", and "make install"
- Hunt down and rename/delete any old versions of "ivtv.o" and "msp3400" (I 
used "locate" and "/sbin/debmod -v | grep")
- Reboot
- Check to make sure your volume hasn't been reset to 0 (like mine 
sometimes is)
- Make sure "mplayer /dev/video0" works
- Try recording
