Well, I (Tako, not Anders who also responded to you in this thread) have
the drivers that came with the XFree86 from CVS, they had to be used
with that version of X because for me they didn't work on the X that
came with RH9.

Ah sorry, I wasn't suggesting that I wasn't able to use higher
resolutions I just wanted to indicate the max resolution I can select to
get (almost) stutter free (live) TV. (Using the OSD will seriously
degrade the performance).

That's why I was interested in Ander's remark that he is able to watch
TV at full NTSC resolution and even use the highest quality setting as
well.
