This does bring up a very, very interesting point, but unfortunately I don't
think such "retroactive ownership" would technically be legal. Say I bought
a cd, and it was lost or stolen (like I paid for my tv, but yesterday's
program was "lost" because I forgot to record it). Just because it's no
longer in my possession doesn't give me the right to obtain this cd again
(or it's copyrighted contents), without paying. Or does it?? I'm thinking
not... (Like you sorta said, even if it were legal under fair use rights,
those went the way of the dodo bird with the DMCA) Plus this is off-topic
for the list and prone to start a flame war, so we should probably leave it
at that :-) It just piqued my curiousity when I read your post.
