The MythTV internals can technically support any codec/format supported 
by libavcodec.  This means that you can do playback with the standalone 
'mythtv' application (just a wrapper around the player part of 
mythfrontend).  But, unless you wrote lots of code (which wouldn't be 
accepted into the main tree, so you'd have to maintain it as a patch), 
Myth will not record to any container format other than its own tweaked 
NuppelVideo.
