[mythtv-users] standard capture size?

I was just reading the v4l mailing list digest I also have, and there were
two interesting notes about capsure resolution:

<Snip>
Many cards are slower as soon as you dont use the standard size 704x576
and/or the preferred pixel format (usually YUV420P)
</Snip>

<Snip>
Looks like you have to use 704x576 when the signal is 4/3 and 924x576
when 16/9. But I have no idea how one detects in V4L that the channel
starts (or stops) transmitting in 16/9.
</Snip>

So this brings a few things to mind, why is the highest resolution that
MythTv supports 720x480 (As I remember these were the numbers) Shouldn't it
be something over 704x576?

I seem to remember reading about television broadcast (not my field of
expertise), and remember something about them broadcasting more lines than
can be diplayed. So is the actual television display 480 with an extra 96
lines of "extra" information?

Would I gain in performance by recording as close to the native format as
possible...704x480? I realize that the amount of cpu time used to scale the
image is much more than the mpeg4 encoding, but any increase in performance
for "free" is nice....

Anyone have any thoughts?

Rich
