[mythtv-users] Digital cable...

My understanding is that for digital tv there was a big push to avoid the PAL/NTSC wars of the past and DVB was pushed as the standard to use. All of europe whether it be on cable, satellite or terrestrial all use this format. So if you live in Europe then you are fine with a Hauppauge card

However, the US appears to have gone it's own way and has a number of different digital standards, I *think* the biggest is HDTV, but I don't really understand what you have over there. I think you are best off talking to your cable company or ringing Hauppauge directly. They should be able to give you the answer directly. Also look at www.linuxtv.org which is where you will find support for DVB mainly.

However, bear in mind that there is no support for digital anything in Myth at the present time. Ben Bucksch is coding up something to support the linux DVB cards though. For anything else you will probably need to use an external IR device to change the channels on your cable box and read the picture in over analogue to your computer's capture card. This does loose many of the benefits of the digital cable signal though...

Doesn't look like anyone's responded so I figured I'd see if I could
help. If I remember right the DVB cards are for the European free
satellite system. For digital cable you may have better luck with a
wintv-D card. They supposedly support digital cable, but I don't know
much about them. The other option(if you're only worried about local
channels) is to just plug it into an analog card. Most digital cable
systems still send the channels under 100 as analog. So you wouldn't be
able to get say discovery channel recorded, but NBC would work fine.
It's what I'm doing currently. Anyway, I hope that helps. Good luck.

Hi all,

I've been reading up on these DVB cards from Hauppauge. They sound cool,
but
out of curiosity, would they be able to do Digital Cable as well?

I'm honestly not sure how my Digital Cable box works, or even what data
format my provider uses. It's a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2200 box, if

that helps, and there is no satelite involved. The input is just like a
normal cable except that the box is needed to decode the digital stream.

I'm pretty sure this format is incompatible with whatever format the
Happauge DVB cards expect, but I just thought I'd ask you guys first :)

Is anyone aware of a PC card that can decode the digital cable stream
directly?

Thanks in advance!

Desmond
