Chris, be careful when buying hauppage hardware. WinTV cards are now
using the Conexant CX21881 chip, which is unsupported un Linux. There's
a work in progress at http://bytesex.org/cx88 however it's in alpha
state and it doesn't fully support the card.

Last week I innocently bought a WinTV GO to find later that it was not
supported. I worked on it for a week, but just got black and white
signal, not very sharp, so I gave up and returned it.

I wrote hauppage support and they told me that the only card that still
uses the bt878 chip is the WinTV Theather, which is supported by the
bttv driver (http://bytesex.org/bttv). It's not as cheap as the GO, but
at least it is fully supported.

I've found it very difficult to buy a cheap TV card that works under
Linux, because it seems that most of them are using new chips not yet
supported. For instance, the Pinnacle PCTV Rave, acording to a message
in this list
(http://lists.snowman.net/pipermail/mythtv-users/2003-April/002869.html)
, is using a new tunner that is not supported, so it won't work.

Any hints regarding proven-to-work cheap cards?

I hope the above info will be useful to you.

Thanks,

Carlos
