Come on -- if you think about it, it's similar to how radio
presets are used (even here in the US). I don't think anybody uses
fixed "channel" numbers that map to FM radio frequencies. Instead,
people assign numbers to their favorite stations. Some TVs have
something similar -- a "speed-dial" type feature where you can assign
your favorite channels to single-digit numbers for easy access. Also,
cable companies already move stations around on you -- eg. VHF channel
11 shows up on cable channel 3, UHF channel 44 shows up on cable channel
12, ... A system that allows the user to decide which station gets
which number does have its advantages.
